The guides on Pool & Tub Fix share general pool and hot tub care information based on a homeowner’s experience and widely accepted practice. Please read this before acting on anything here.
Every pool is different
The right chemical targets and dosages depend on your pool or spa’s volume, surface (plaster, vinyl, fiberglass), sanitizer system, equipment, climate and local water. Ranges we mention are common starting points, not instructions for your specific pool. Your test kit, product labels and equipment manuals always take priority.
Chemical safety basics
- Never mix pool chemicals with each other, even in the same scoop or bucket. Some combinations can release toxic gas or start a fire.
- Add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals, and follow the label’s dosing directions.
- Wear gloves and eye protection, work in fresh air and store chemicals cool, dry and away from children and pets.
- Keep swimmers out until levels are back in the safe range stated on the product label.
Jobs for professionals
Electrical work on pumps, heaters, lights or spa control packs, gas heater service, bonding and grounding, structural cracks and underground leaks should be handled by licensed professionals. If a guide reaches that point, it will say so.
Health concerns
If you or someone else has a skin reaction, breathing trouble or illness after swimming or exposure to chemicals, contact a medical professional or Poison Control. Nothing on this site is medical advice.
